THE ROARING TWENTIES

It all started in 1920 when normalcy returned to politics and everyone was in the wake of World War 1 and Europeans ordered alarge amount of supplies from all American factories. After the United States entered the war the american factories made a demand to get more military supplies. After the war more that 2 million soldiers came home looking for jobs, while simultaneously the factories were planning to stop selling military supplies. Then came a economic slump or a recession. The voters were fed up with the recession and then appointed democrat Warren Harding as president. Harding then took action and appointed went out of his way to find por- businessmen who could easily follow the policies of the law and the constitution. He appointed Andrew Mellon a wealthy fianancier as secretary of treasury. Andrew balanced the country's budget and the also made sure that taxes descended.Herbert Hoover became the new secretary of commerce During World War 1. The world admired him because of the way that he organized his effort to supply food to millions of starving Belgians. As secretary of commerce Hoover worked to help American businesses expand all over and espacially over seas. For all other cabinet spaces Harding appointed some old friends and later they were known as the " Ohio gang" Warren was an honest and hard- working man but the rest of the "Ohio Gang' thought of the government services as a way to enrich themselves.Harding did not like that at all and as a result there was a series of scandals. Ex.. Harding made Charles Forbes head of the veteran bureau.Later Charles was convicted of stealing millions of dollars from the bureau, Harding took Charles Stealing as betrayal and wanted to do something legal to punish him. As a punishment Warren thought hard and long about what exactly he would do to punish him.Rumors of more scandals came about and they got back to Harding it really made him distressed. In August 1923 Warren Harding died of a heart attack, and many people believed that the scandal and Forbes betrayal led to Harding's death. After Warren died a lot more scandals came about and even more horrible that before, One of the most seroius involved secretaries of the Interior Albert Fall. two oil executives had bribed Albert and in return he leased then government land in the state of California and at Teapot Dome in Wyoming. As a result of this, people later called the particular scandal" The Teapot Dome scandal. On the day that Warren Harding died the Vice President ( Calvin Coolidge) went to take a visit to his father's farm in Vermont. Calvin Coolidge claimed that he was awakened by his father and he noticed that his voice trembled.Coolidge's father used the bible to swear his son in a president. When Coolidge became president the people compared him to Wareen Harding. Harding loved to throw political parties but Coolidge prefered to stay business related and to go to other people's parties. One day a woman came to Cooliidge and she made a bet with him that she could get him to say more than two words to her if he could do sonething about the damage caused by the scandals that took place in the past. In 1924 Coolidge went up against democrat John Davis and Progressive Robert La Follette. Cooliogde won and like Harding president Coolidge believed that prosperity for all Americans depended on business prosperity. As factories switched to consumer goods, the postwar started. In 1923-1929 the quantity of goods made industry nearly doubled, the roaring twenties was a tough time the people went throught hard times and still the roating twenties ia known as an unforgettable timeline.
